Mission

Movement for Family Power’s mission is to fight the child welfare system’s criminalization and punishment of families.

Purpose

We hope to challenge the prevailing narrative of the child protection system as one that either protects children and helps families or one that doesn’t have enough funding to put enough children in foster care to protect them. We hope to begin to shed light on how the child protection system operates similarly to the criminal legal system to criminalize and punish poor and marginalized communities and strip them of economic, social and political power. We hope that as we build up this evidence and research base, the media narrative will change, and more organizations within the movement will begin working on this issue. We hope to simultaneously undertake policy and legal advocacy to fight the criminalizing and punishing tendencies of the child protection system.
