Mission

To improve scientific understanding of large pelagic species by supporting and participating in co-operative research projects, such as Tag a Tiny™.

Purpose

The Large Pelagics Research Center (LPRC) was established in 2003 at The University of New Hampshire to stimulate and conduct research on key species of interest to commercial and recreational fisheries in the Atlantic Ocean. The Center has since acted as an academic research laboratory and secured and distributed extramural funding through competitive grants to other researchers studying large pelagic species. Working closely with fishermen and using state-of-the-art technologies, LPRC’s mission is to conduct biological and ecological research on pelagic species including tunas, sharks, billfish and sea turtles. LPRC endeavors to develop scientific understanding that supports effective ecosystem-based management and conservation of these highly migratory marine species.
