A partnership of Sacramento area food co-ops, land trusts, farming nonprofits and members of our local food community, we raise funds to preserve small working farms for current and future generations—one farm at a time.
As our nation’s farmers grow older, the fate of their land is threatened and their shoes are increasingly hard to fill. An estimated 70% of all US farmland will change hands in the next 20 years, but high land values and low profit margins do not favor beginning farmers and ranchers, who consistently name land access as one of the top two barriers to entry into agriculture. Meanwhile, most current agricultural land preservation tools are not designed to protect small farms, or even necessarily to keep farmers on the land.
We believe that improving land security for the next generation — especially on small family farms — is critical to a sustainable agricultural future. Our group of food co-ops, farm service and land preservation nonprofits, and farmers, was formed to preserve the place of small farms in our communities, and to connect with an important source of support and funds for doing so. By mobilizing food co-op members and shoppers to invest in “one farm at a time,” we can help shape the future of our region’s most beloved farms and promising young farmers.
