NCSA connects, educates, and empowers City of Los Angeles Neighborhood Councils – community hubs of civic engagement – to accelerate citywide sustainability and resilience.
Like many cities, L.A. faces deep environmental and other sustainability challenges. For example, it is grappling with record drought conditions, and extreme heat days that will quintuple by mid-century. The City’s scale — 3.9 million people, spread out across 500 square miles and more than 100 diverse communities — makes it hard for dispersed sustainability advocates to create and leverage positive impacts across the City. In addition, while many Angelenos dedicate countless hours to make their communities environmentally sustainable and resilient, some 60% of communities lack clear “green” leaders on their Neighborhood Councils. Finally, until the NCSA was formed, many long-standing community sustainability champions worked in silos, without a support network to help them be successful, share best practices, and amplify their impact. The NCSA is designed to fill these gaps.
