Los Angeles Alliance for Science broadcasts a nonpartisan message encouraging policymakers to champion and fund science that upholds the common good, and to advocate for evidence-based policies in the public interest at the local, state and national levels.
Los Angeles Alliance for Science celebrates the crucial role science plays in driving our economic growth, preserving our environment, and protecting the health of our citizens. Our core principles include communication, funding, policy, diversity and civic engagement.
Communication: It is imperative to the health and safety of our nation that scientists remain free to communicate their results and conclusions without omission or alteration. Likewise, we encourage citizens to take an interest in scientific research and support initiatives to increase scientific literacy and public knowledge.
Funding: Investment in basic scientific research is essential to discovery and innovation. A consistent, long-term approach to public science funding must be sustained.
Policy: Decisions regarding public policy must be evidence-based, relying on data collected according to scientific best practices. Policy should reflect our best understanding of scientific issues, adhering to scientific consensus.
Diversity: We recognized the value of varied backgrounds and perspectives. We oppose the manipulation of science to marginalize groups of people, and instead support the right to pursue and enjoy the fruits of science regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, religion or lack thereof, political affiliation, or socioeconomic status.
Civic Engagement: We seek to increase civic engagement among scientists, encouraging those in scientific field to participate in local, state and national government, where it is to voice their opinions, advise within their areas of expertise, or run for office.
