The project mission is to unblock stuck points in seafood sustainability through testing sustainable business analysis tools in a Maori seafood company.

The project purpose is to pilot the use of ecosystem service approaches in commercial seafood, through working with Aotearoa Fisheries Ltd (AFL). AFL are the commercial managers of more than 50% of New Zealand’s fisheries and owned by the Maori people of New Zealand. Maori have deeply held beliefs about kaitiakitanga (stewardship) and with this project, sought to gain a more holistic understanding of the issues affecting the paua (abalone) fishery. The project also introduced AFL to the global sustainable seafood movement as part of their sustainability journey and established an initial international community of practice around using ecosystem services in seafood.
