Green Schools Initiative

Mission

The Green Schools Initiative works to promote environmental literacy and reduce the environmental footprint of K-12 schools by empowering students, teachers, parents, and staff to take green actions using their school campus as a hands-on sustainability laboratory.

Purpose

Green Schools Initiative works to transform schools into community models of sustainability, engaging youth in hands-on, inquiry-based learning and action. We advocate for policies, action plans, and professional development that foster high performance, cost-efficient, and academically excellent schools, catalyzing actions to: eliminate toxics, use resources sustainably, create green schoolyards and buildings, serve healthy food, and teach stewardship. We focus on training teachers, parents, facility directors, school board members and others in our “7 Steps to a Green School” approach; providing toolkits, lessons, and activities to support schools in reducing their environmental footprint; and advocating for state and federal policies that support healthy and sustainable schools and environmental literacy. Our programs align with the Green Ribbon Schools award. We have trained about 2,000 educators from 400 schools and districts. We focus our efforts on K-12 schools and districts throughout California. GSI sits on the Advisory Council for Green Schools National Network.
